SIDS Awareness Month

October is SIDS Awareness Month — a reminder of the importance of safe sleep for infants. Learn the simple, proven steps every parent should know to help reduce the risk of SIDS in our latest blog.

October is SIDS Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and helping families understand how to reduce risks through safe sleep practices. While the exact cause of SIDS remains unknown, research has shown that certain steps can help keep babies safer during sleep.

What is SIDS?
SIDS is the sudden, unexplained death of an infant under one year of age, often occurring during sleep. Although rare, it is a leading cause of death in babies between 1 month and 12 months old. The good news is that parents and caregivers can take practical steps to create a safer sleep environment and lower the risk.

Safe Sleep Practices Every Parent Should Know

Here are the American Academy of Pediatrics’ (AAP) recommendations for safe sleep:

  • Back to Sleep, Every Time: Always place your baby on their back to sleep, for naps and at night. This position has been shown to reduce the risk of SIDS.
  • Firm, Flat Sleep Surface: Use a safety-approved crib, bassinet, or play yard with a tight-fitting sheet. Avoid soft bedding, pillows, or crib bumpers.
  • Room Share, Don’t Bed Share: Keep your baby’s sleep space in your room, close to your bed, for at least the first 6 months. However, your baby should have their own separate surface.
  • No Loose Items: Keep the crib free of toys, blankets, or stuffed animals, which could increase the risk of suffocation. Instead, dress your baby in a wearable blanket or sleep sack if extra warmth is needed.
  • Avoid Overheating: Dress your baby in light sleep clothing and keep the room at a comfortable temperature.
  • Smoke-Free Environment: Babies exposed to smoke (during pregnancy or after birth) are at higher risk for SIDS. A smoke-free home and car are important for your baby’s health.

Reassurance for Parents
It’s natural to feel anxious when thinking about SIDS, but it’s important to remember that these safe sleep steps make a big difference in reducing risk. Most importantly, talk with your pediatrician if you have questions or concerns about your baby’s sleep.
