Prolotherapy
Prolotherapy, a nonsurgical treatment to stimulate healing, is performed for patients who are experiencing medical issues such as shoulder pain, Achilles pain, tennis elbow, knee arthritis, and plantar fascia. The procedure involves injecting a solution of saline and dextrose into joints near the ligament for the purpose of strengthening weakened connective tissue by activating the human body's immune response. It should only be used in "safe zones", avoiding nerves and arteries. Depending on multiple factors, the time needed to perform the injection varies greatly. After the initial injection, it is recommended to wait 4 weeks to reassess and determine if additional injections are needed. Typically, only 1 to 4 treatments are given.
Major medical insurance companies do not usually cover this procedure due to their view as an investigational or experimental procedure, but is covered by most workman's compensation. Please contact your insurance company prior to your visit to understand your particular plan's coverage limitations.
